Tire Rotation & Balancing

Tires wear at different rates depending on their position — the drive wheels and the steering wheels do more work. Rotating them on schedule evens out that wear and can add thousands of miles to a set. Balancing keeps them spinning smoothly at speed. You can make your vehicle tires last longer with regular tire rotation and wheel balancing.

Let’s start with tire rotation. In normal driving around New England, your front tires wear more on the shoulders because they handle much of the cornering forces in turns. Front-wheel drive vehicles have even more force on the front tires.

We rotate the tires so that all of the tires do some duty on the front end as well as getting a little break on the back end. That way, all four tires wear more evenly over their life and last longer.

For most vehicles in Maine and New Hampshire, tires are rotated front to back. Some manufacturers recommend a cross rotational pattern that includes the spare tire, and some high-performance vehicles have different size tires on the front and rear and may even have uni-directional tires that can only be on the left or the right side of the vehicle. Your tire manufacturer will have a recommendation for how often you should rotate your tires. It’s usually somewhere around 4000 to 7,500 miles. We see the best results with tire rotations at every 5K mile service interval usually performed with an oil change.

Let’s move on to wheel balancing. That’s when there are heavy spots on the tire and wheel that cause it to wobble.

Balancing adds weights to the wheel to balance it out. Now, we are talking about very small weight differences. Variations in the tire and wheel manufacture can cause a slight imbalance. The valve stem, and now the tire pressure monitoring sensors in the tire, also play into the equation.

Even small differences can cause annoying vibrations at speed: the wheel is essentially bouncing a bit as it goes down the road. For example, at freeway speeds, an out of balance wheel can be slamming into the road 14 times a second. That’s annoying and can cause your tires to wear out more quickly.

If a front wheel’s out of balance you’ll feel the vibration through the steering wheel. When it’s a rear tire, you’ll feel the vibration through your seat. If you’re getting bad vibes from your vehicle, bring it in to see if it’s a balance issue or something else. You should balance your wheels whenever you get a new tire or remount a tire like when it’s been removed for a flat repair.

Wheel balance weights can fall off and cause vibrations. When this happens you need to get the wheel rebalanced. It’s estimated that 70,000 tons of lead weights are lost each year worldwide. Many states are banning the use of lead wheel balance weights for environmental reasons. Alternate materials such as zinc are now being used.

How often should tires be rotated?

Every 5,000 to 7,500 miles is the standard recommendation, which conveniently lines up with most oil change intervals. Doing both at once is the easiest way to stay on schedule without a separate visit.

Why do tires wear unevenly if I don't rotate them?

Each position does a different job. On a front-wheel-drive car, the front tires handle steering, most of the braking, and all of the power delivery — so they wear substantially faster. Without rotation, you end up replacing the fronts while the rears still have most of their tread, which effectively wastes half a set of tires.

What is the difference between rotating and balancing?

Rotation moves tires to different positions to even out wear. Balancing corrects the weight distribution of each tire and wheel assembly so it spins without vibration. They are different services that solve different problems, and both are worth doing.

Do I need to rotate directional or staggered tires?

Directional tires can only rotate front to back on the same side, because they are designed to turn in one direction. Staggered setups — different tire sizes front and rear — often cannot be rotated at all. We identify what your vehicle has and rotate it correctly, or tell you if it cannot be done.

What causes vibration at highway speed?

Vibration that appears around highway speed is usually a tire and wheel balance issue, but it can also be a bent wheel, a tire with internal separation, a worn wheel bearing, or a driveline problem. We diagnose rather than just adding weights and hoping.

Why do you torque lug nuts by hand?

An impact gun applies wildly inconsistent torque and routinely over-tightens lug nuts, which stretches studs and warps brake rotors — a leading cause of brake pulsation. We torque every lug nut to the manufacturer's specification with a torque wrench, every time.

Can I rotate tires with a full-size spare?

If your spare is a matching full-size tire on a matching wheel, it can be included in a five-tire rotation, which spreads the wear across five tires instead of four. Temporary or compact spares cannot be rotated in.

  • Balance each wheel and tire assembly on a computerized balancer
  • Apply corrective weights to eliminate vibration
  • Inspect brakes and suspension while the wheels are off
  • Torque all lug nuts to specification with a torque wrench, never an impact gun
  • Reset the TPMS system where required
  • Road test to confirm a smooth, vibration-free ride
