CV Axle Replacement

CV axles transmit power from the transmission to your wheels while allowing them to steer and travel over bumps. The constant-velocity joints are packed with grease and sealed in a rubber boot — and when that boot tears, the grease escapes, dirt gets in, and the joint's days are numbered. Your axles are the last link in transferring power from the engine to your wheels. They’re strong parts that last a long time – but they can run into trouble.

Axles just wear out over time and need to be replaced. And sometimes axle seals leak, causing the axle to wear out prematurely. Lubricant leaks out, and water and dirt can get in and contaminate the gears. When this happens you might hear strange noises coming from your wheels especially when turning.

If you have a rear-wheel drive vehicle, the sound would be at the rear end. If you have a front-wheel drive vehicle, the sound would be up front. Of course, with an all-wheel drive, the sound could come from either front or back. It might be a groaning sound or clunking when turning.

Types of Axles

There are different kinds of axles, each with their own potential problems. Our Master technicians will know this and can check for things like leaking seals, torn CV boots, worn axle joints. An inspection will reveal if there are any problems or if a part is nearing failure.

When there is a concern with the axle shaft, it will be removed and inspected. If it’s damaged, the shaft will have to be replaced. If the shaft is in good shape, it’ll be cleaned, lubed and reinstalled. Damaged CV boots are replaced as well.

Don’t Procrastinate

It’s important to take care of this work as soon as you become aware of a problem. Waiting only makes the damage worse and more expensive to repair later. If the axle fails completely, it could lock up. This could severely damage other things like your transmission – very expensive. It could also contribute to an accident, which nobody wants.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a clicking noise on turns mean?

Clicking or popping during a turn — especially a slow, tight turn — is the classic symptom of a worn outer CV joint. It happens because the joint has lost its grease, taken in dirt, and worn out the internal bearings.

Can a torn CV boot be repaired without replacing the axle?

Sometimes, if it is caught early. If the boot just tore and the joint has not yet taken in dirt or lost significant grease, replacing the boot and repacking the joint can work. In practice, boot tears usually go unnoticed for a while, and by the time we see it the joint is already contaminated — at which point replacing the axle is the more reliable and often more economical repair.

How long can I drive with a bad CV axle?

We do not recommend putting it off. A worn CV joint gets progressively worse and can eventually seize or separate. Continuing to drive also risks the joint failing at speed, which can damage surrounding components and leave you stranded.

What happens if a CV axle breaks completely?

If the outer joint separates, you lose all power to that wheel and the axle can flail, damaging the CV boot area, the brake line, the ABS wiring, and the suspension. On some vehicles it can also cause a loss of control. It is not a failure you want to experience at highway speed.

How long do CV axles last?

Most CV axles last well over 100,000 miles, and often the life of the vehicle. Their most common enemy is a torn boot — in New England, road salt and debris are hard on the rubber, and a small tear leads directly to joint failure.

Does a bad CV axle affect alignment?

Not directly, but a failing axle can produce vibration and pull that feels like an alignment problem. It is worth having us confirm which one you actually have before you pay for an alignment that will not fix the noise.

Signs you need this service:

  • Clicking or popping noise when turning, especially sharp low-speed turns
  • Vibration during acceleration that worsens with speed
  • Clunking when shifting into drive or reverse
  • Grease splattered on the inside of the wheel or on the ground
  • Torn, cracked, or leaking CV boot
  • Shuddering or shaking under acceleration
  • Humming or growling from the front of the vehicle

Our process:

  • Road test the vehicle, including tight turns in both directions, to confirm the noise
  • Lift the vehicle and inspect both CV boots for tears, cracks, and grease loss
  • Check the axle joints for excessive play and binding
  • Rule out wheel bearings, tires, and suspension as the source of the noise
  • Review findings with photos and provide a written estimate
  • Remove the failed axle and inspect the transmission or hub seal
  • Install a quality replacement axle and secure the axle nut to torque specification
  • Replace the hub or transmission seal if it shows leaking
  • Verify boot clamps and check for interference at full steering lock
  • Road test to confirm the noise and vibration are gone
